Water Damage: What are the Most Common Causes?



It’s not every day that think of your pipes to check for damage. In fact, water damage occurs and causes damage more than you think it does. Water damage restoration is something that many residents may need without realizing it, as it can cause wood rot, insect infestation and mold. Many different factors can create this excess water and thereby contribute to water damage.

What causes water damage?

One of the most common causes of water damage are pipes that burst or leak. This happens when drains and toilets get blocked, causing pressure in the pipe, which consequently causes it to burst or leak, especially when the pipes are old and rusty. Malfunctioning garbage disposals are another typical reason for pipes to burst. Plumbing problems, which are hard to detect, may also happen due to hoses and pipes joints that are not fully attached.

As household appliances get old, such as washing machines, refrigerators, and water heaters, its pipes begin to rust and crack and their hoses can weaken. Lastly, while nobody has control over natural water-related calamities, all you can do is take all the preventive measures possible to minimize damage that it can bring.

With all those being said, make sure to check your home periodically. Do not assume that water damage is not needed until it gets worse. There are many more causes of water damage over time and if you’re unsure, then it’s always best to have your home checked by a plumbing expert.
