Water damage can happen at the most opportune moment. It could be
brought about simply because of a busted pipe. In most cases, however, water
damage comes as a result of torrential rains and the succeeding flood. In such
cases, you need to make sure that you know what to do.
Going Back to Your Home
Once the flood has subsided and you are already allowed to go back home,
you need to make sure that you turn off any source of water as well as keep
yourself from immediately plugging in any appliance. While the flood waters
might have subsided, there might still be some puddles left behind that could
cause electrocution.
Restoring Items
Make sure you remove your valuable items from your flooded home. Once
you have everything out, separate those that are beyond repair and those that
can still be salvaged. Those belonging to the first group should be discarded
to prevent spread of mold and mildew, while those belonging to the latter
should be air dried.
Taking Care of Your Home
Mop any water puddles left and start inspecting the status of your
vents, ducts, walls and ceilings. In most cases, air duct cleaning might be
required in order to keep mold and mildew from growing. Keep in mind that there
is a high possibility that the dirt and dust in your ducts have already become
mud and could contribute to mold growth as well as musty smell permeating your
home.
